The new bells of Paris’ world famous Notre Dame Cathedral, this year celebrating its 850 th anniversary, will have at least one royal ‘sponsor’. Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess Mara Teresa is ‘godmother’ to the bourdon bell, named Marie, which will be consecrated Saturday in the Notre Dame by Cardinal André XXIII, Archbishop of Paris.

The bell, cast in The Netherlands, joins eight other new bells for the Cathedral.

Each of them has a name, and is sponsored by namesake’s among whom also Pope Benedict XVI.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa will be accompanied by her husband Grand Duke Henri and her daughter Princess Alexandra. © RB
