Years back ('70s, I think), Playboy magazine ran a short story set in Southern swampland, where many bog plants known as niggerheads grew wild--that element was a part of the plotline--and anticipating reader reaction, a sidebar was run, explaining the etymology, pointing out the fact that it did NOT, in fact, originate from what would seem an obvious racial slur. Nobody believed it. The mail bin was swamped, so to speak.

More recently, a congressional committee head used the term "niggardly" in a budget speech, and he was forced to apologize amid the uproar. We've become a nation of overly tiptoing, illiterate dumbasses.
