Great comments all. But to SSanf's argument that disease will greatly reduce the world's population, I have to respectfully disagree. Even without modern medicines we have seen that populations in the past were not substantially held in check. The Black Plague of the 13th and 14th centuries reduced Europe's population by as much as 3/4's and yet as soon as it passed the population exploded. Going further back, it is now thought that 75,000 years ago the human population, (both Sapien and Neanderthal), were reduced to numbers only in the thousands by devastating volcanic action causing worldwide climatic change. And yet, here we are at over 6 billion after countless centuries of war, pestilence and disease. True, Western Europeans are diminishing but the overall growth continues at a staggering rate. I'm afraid I don't share your optimistic (hahaha) attitude that some great pestilence will save us from eating our own.
