There are alternatives. I have seen other platforms but i can't say they're anywhere near as good as ning.

I have a suggestion that might help getting members to donate.
When people see a 'donate' button, i'm sure most feel like they should give a substational amount (like $50 or so), which can then turn them off of donating at all. (Not in all cases)
I think if DT asked members to help by donating $5 - $10 each, members might be more willing to contribute.
Obviously you need to let them know it's not an obligation. The more smaller donations you get will add up & help the site a lot rather than just 1 donation here & their.

Something to think about maybe?
