Vacancy 2: First Cut
South Carolinian Hillbillies at a motel decide to get into the snuff film biz in a roundabout way after a hidden camera in a room reveals a murder. Say, they think to themselves, this could git us some munee. Kill tha guests! Sell tha footage!
Well, compared to 99% of the other shit flicks I’ve reviewed, this was pretty damn good. Cinematography is cool & character development slight. Actual varying races! 3 friends resembling the mod squad driving in the middle of the night need a place to stay. But not before newlywedders need the same hotel. And some old couple comes by & tries to get a room. The hillbillies have fun scaring the piss out of the mod squad. Slowly, hillbillies disintegrate- fight amongst themselves- then disintegrate physically, as Julie & Link kick their asses. Lighting & colors are nice. Julie is not a great actress. Put it that way. “You remind me of a girl I picked up in Tulsa. She made my ears bleed when she screamed. I wonder what you sound like.” Wasn’t predictable. The movie. A lot of the way thru. Showdown in a swamp.
Shot in 19 days, kind of documentary style/wing it scenes (so they say in the special features section at the end) mostly at night, with no name actors. Didn’t laugh once. I wouldn’t have minded laughing. The cameras are all just right there from hand held single shots & continuous sustained performances. Much running. Corpse in a crawlspace. Live maggots on prostitute’s face. Refreshingly free from supernatural bullshit and flashback crap. I’d say rent if you have an hour to kill. Director claims he isn’t into gratuitous violence. You be the judge of that.
