This is quickly becoming the most talked about, yet least acted upon topic in news. Its a joke now. People are losing their means to make a living, animals are taking the brunt end of the human interference stick, and the gulf coast in general is fucked. Now, lets put aside the fact that they set up the fucking booms to gather the exposed oil wrong, and take a look at how they intended to fix the completely avoidable gushing pipe. When they actually try stuffing garbage in the pipe as an actual measure to make things right, they kind of wiped their ass and smeared it on the publics face saying its a facial scrub. Bear with me now, I am about to solve the deepwater horizon fiasco in a blog.
Meet hydrophobic sand:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaqM5LD7bAYHydrophobic sand is a silicate derived compound that effectively repels water while bonding with oil. Lets presume that you're able to insert a smaller pipe into the leaking oil pipe, assuming the diamond sawed robots cut it properly. From this smaller pipe you would pump this sand in with enough pressure and fast enough to counter the pressure shooting out from the oil pipe. This part is important for the success of this operation, a slow chug would just leave you spouting sand that will never get wet all over the gulf.
Immediately after sealing it off tightly, concrete must be pumped in to permanently seal the cap. This will not allow for continued use of the pipe, and in all honesty, thats the real reason any method like this isn't being put into use. They're not going to be able to make enough of a profit from sealing the pipe off entirely, yet dumping millions of gallons of toxic crude into a shared coastal body of water is acceptable. Right.
Anyway, tl;dr - bp only gives a shit about its bottom line, there are way too many high ranking government officials living beyond comfortably with "gifts" (read - bribes, payoffs, etc.) to advocate anything else besides petroleum. Enjoy your fucked up ecosystem, folks.
